Mesh Moving Techniques for Fluid-Structure Interactions With Large Displacements

چکیده
In computation of fluid-structure interactions, we use mesh update methods consisting of mesh-moving and remeshing-as-needed. When the geometries are complex and the structural displacements are large, it becomes even more important that the mesh moving techniques are designed with the objective to reduce the frequency of remeshing. To that end, we present here mesh moving techniques where the motion of the nodes is governed by the equations of elasticity, with selective treatment of mesh deformation based on element sizes as well as deformation modes in terms of shape and volume changes. We also present results from application of these techniques to a set of two-dimensional test cases. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1530635#

Transient Mesh Adaptivity with Large Rigid-Body Displacements
This paper presents a procedure for computing fluid-structure interaction problems when the boundaries of the domain undergo large displacements. The algorithm is based on both mesh motion and mesh adaptation techniques. More specifically, we use a node repositioning algorithm based on an elastic analogy together with a mesh adaptation procedure based on local mesh modifications [1]. This paper...
متن کاملEfficient Moving Mesh Technique Using Generalized Swapping
Three-dimensional real-life simulations are generally unsteady and involve moving geometries. Industries are currently still very far from performing such simulations on a daily basis, mainly due to the robustness of the moving mesh algorithm and their extensive computational cost. The proposed approach is a way to improve these two issues. This paper brings two new ideas. First, it demonstrate...
متن کاملExtended ALE Method for fluid-structure interaction problems with large structural displacements
Standard Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) methods for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems fail due to excessive mesh deformations when the structural displacement is large. We propose a method that successfully deals with this problem, keeping the same mesh connectivity while enforcing mesh alignment with the structure. The proposed Extended ALE Method relies on a va...
متن کاملFluid-structure interactions using different mesh motion techniques
In this work, we compare different mesh moving techniques for monolithically-coupled fluid-structure interactions in arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian coordinates. The mesh movement is realized by solving an additional partial differential equation of harmonic, linear-elastic, or biharmonic type. We examine an implementation of time discretization that is designed with finite differences. Spatial d...

As a category of challenging flow problems, flows with moving boundaries and interfaces, includes fluid–particle, fluid–object and fluid–structure interactions; free-surface and two-fluid flows; and flows with moving mechanical components. To address the challenges involved in computation of this category of problems, we developed a number of interface-tracking and interface-capturing technique...
